RESULTS
OF INTERVIEW / EHAB
1. On
06APR06, Reporting Agent (RA) interviewed Ms. EHAB Ayed Turki, CIV, at
her residence (House 4) in the Al Askari neighborhood of Haditha, Iraq
(IZ). The interview was conducted in Arabic with Sari “Sam” NSEIR, CIV
Contractor, providing the Arabic-English translation. Ms. EHAB was
advised this interview was being conducted pursuant to the captioned
investigation. Due to the patriarchal naming structure associated with
Arab culture, all individuals identified in this report will be
addressed by their first name after being fully identified. All
spellings of names are as provided by the linguist. For purposes of
clarity, the houses referenced in this report are designated with
numbers created during the course of this investigation. The numbers
are not actual street addresses of the houses.
2. Ms.
EHAB advised she was sleeping at her residence on the morning of
19NOV05 when she heard a very loud noise outside. Ms. EHAB stated she
presumed the loud noise was some sort of explosion, but did not go
outside to see what was happening. After the explosion, Ms. EHAB
related she heard screaming and gunfire, but remained in the residence
and did not see what was going on.

Although she could not recall specifically how long, Ms. EHAB advised
it was quiet for quite some time before she heard the U.S. Marines
walking down the street and yelling. Ms. EHAB stated her husband, Mr.
JASEB Aiad Ahmed, CIV, called out to her and said the Marines were at
the house and everybody had to go outside the house into the
courtyard. Ms. EHAB related the time was 0945, because she was in the
kitchen making breakfast and looked at the clock. Once outside, Ms.
EHAB related they were separated into two lines, a line of women,
children and elderly in the back and a line of men in the front. Ms.
EHAB stated she remembers the Marines asking about a “bomb”.

According to Ms. EHAB, there were three Marines. Ms. EHAB stated the
Marines asked the group if they had any weapons in the house. Ms. EHAB
advised her husband, Mr. JASEB and her brother-in-law Mr. JAMAL Aiad
Ahmed, CIV, informed the Marines that they each had an AK-47 assault
rifle in their respective houses. Ms. EHAB stated Mr. JASEB informed
the Marines he was a traffic officer and that is why he had an AK-47.
Ms. EHAB advised the Marines escorted Mr. JASEB into House 4 and Mr.
JAMAL into House 3 to retrieve the AK-47s. Ms. EHAB could not recall
what happened to the AK-47s after the Marines took control of them.
5. Once
the Marines had control of the AK-47s, Ms. EHAB stated the Marines
told them all to sit down. Ms. EHAB stated two of the Marines entered
House 4 alone and were talking with one another. Ms. EHAB related the
third Marine stood outside pointing his weapon at them. When the two
Marines who were in House 4 came back outside, Ms. EHAB advised the
Marines told her brother-in-law Mr. KAHTAR Aiad Ahmed, CIV, to hand
the baby he was holding to Ms. EHAB.
6. Ms.
EHAB related the Marines told all of the men to go inside House 4. Ms.
EHAB stated her young nephew, Mr. KHALED Jamal Aiad, CIV, was among
the men. As the Marines were taking the men into House 4, Ms. EHAB
advised she told Mr. KHALED to come back outside. Ms. EHAB stated Mr.
KHALED came back outside and the Marines did not object. As two
Marines were walking the men into House 4, Ms. EHAB advised the third
Marine was pointing his weapon and pushing the women, children, and
elders back towards House 3 with the muzzle of his weapon. According
to Ms. EHAB, the Marine ushered them into House 3 and closed the door.
Ms. EHAB stated her sister-in-law, Ms. NAJLAE Abd Al-Razak, CIV, tried
to open the door several times, but the Marine outside kept closing
it. After Ms. NAJLAE tired to open the door for a third time, Ms. EHAB
related the Marine outside slammed the door and broke the window
adjacent to the door with his rifle. While in House 3, Ms. EHAB stated
they heard gunfire and started screaming and yelling. Ms. EHAB stated
Ms. NAJLAE opened the door a fourth time and the Marine outside the
door was gone.
7. Ms.
EHAB stated the two women immediately ran next door to House 4 and saw
the other two Marines walking out of the house. Ms. EHAB related it
was very quiet and they could smell gunpowder in the house. According
to Ms. EHAB, Ms. NAJLAE and Mr. KHALED were the first to enter House
4. Ms. EHAB advised as she entered House 4 and walked through the
hallway, she could see Mr. JASEB’s feet in one of the bedrooms. Ms.
EHAB stated she walked into the bedroom and saw all four men; Mr.
JASEB, Mr. JAMAL, and two of her other brother-in-laws, Mr. KATAN Aiad
Ahmed, CIV, and Mr. MARWAN Aiad Ahmed, CIV, lying dead on the ground.
Ms. EHAB related all the women started screaming and crying. Ms. EHAB
stated that Ms. NAJLAE and Mr. KHALED ran out of House 4 to go get her
brother-in-law, Mr. YUSEF Aiad Ahmed, CIV. Ms. EHAB stated Mr. YUSEF’s
residence is approximately one block away.
8. At
the request of RA, Ms. EHAB showed RA where each man was lying when
she entered the room. Ms. EHAB related Mr. JASEB was the first one you
could see as you entered the room. According to Ms. EHAB, Mr. JASEB
was lying with his head to the south near the edge of the closet and
his feet extending north near the bedroom door. Ms. EHAB related Mr.
KATAN was next with his head resting on the base of the closet and his
feet near Mr. JASEB’s head. Ms. EHAB stated Mr. MARWAN was almost
completely in the closet with only his feet sticking out. Ms. EHAB
advised Mr. MARWAN’s head was leaning up against the backside of the
closet. Ms. EHAB advised Mr. JAMAL was the furthest in the room, with
his head very close to the south wall and his feet to the north.
9. Ms.
EHAB related after approximately thirty minutes to one hour, four
different Marines came to House 4. Ms. EHAB stated she asked the
Marines to leave. Ms. EHAB advised two Marines stayed outside and two
Marines came into House 4. Ms. EHAB stated at the same time, her
sister-in-law (Mr. YUSEF’s wife), Ms. RANA Sayhood, CIV, came into
House 4 though the backdoor. According to Ms. EHAB, Ms. RANA told the
women that Mr.YUSEF had been detained by the Marines. Ms. EHAB stated
one of the Marines left House 4 carrying Mr. KATAN’s suitcase. Ms.
EHAB stated she does not know exactly what was in Mr. KATAN’s
suitcase, but advised Mr. KATAN was planning on traveling to Trabil,
IZ, near the Jordanian border where he works. In response to
questioning, Ms. EHAB stated she did not believe Mr. KATAN had a
Jordanian passport, but believed he did have an Iraqi passport. After
the Marines left the house, Ms. EHAB stated she took her baby and
departed House 4.
10, Ms.
EHAB advised the entire incident from the time the first Marines
arrived until the four men were killed was less than fifteen minutes.
Ms. EHAB related she did not see any fighters other than Marines, but
stated that at no time did she ever go outside to see what was going
on.
