During a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader near Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan, Lieutenant Murphy displayed remarkable heroism in the face of imminent danger. On June 28, 2005, operating in a hostile, rugged area controlled by the enemy, Lieutenant Murphy’s team was discovered by sympathizers of the anti-coalition militia, who divulged their location to Taliban fighters.
Subsequently, a group of 30 to 40 enemy fighters besieged his four-member team. With unwavering determination, Lieutenant Murphy fearlessly led his men in a fierce battle against the overwhelming enemy force.
The intense firefight led to numerous enemy casualties and the injury of all four team members. Despite his own wounds, Lieutenant Murphy remained composed and continued to lead and inspire his team. When the primary communicator was fatally wounded, Lieutenant Murphy made multiple attempts to call for assistance for his besieged teammates.
Understanding the impossibility of communication in the challenging terrain and facing almost certain death, he bravely fought his way into an exposed area to gain a better position for transmitting a call. This deliberate and heroic act left him without cover, making him vulnerable to direct enemy fire.
Despite the grave risk, he successfully established contact with his headquarters, maintaining his exposed position while providing his location and urgently requesting support for his team. In his ultimate act of bravery, he persisted in engaging the enemy until he was mortally wounded, sacrificing his life for his country and the cause of freedom.
Through his selfless leadership, courageous deeds, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lieutenant Murphy brought great honor to himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
